Who’s Will?
Will is a lifelong performer. A sought after teacher and a well-seasoned presence in the world of music, television, art and design and film production.
He has been performing music all of his life, and as the child of jazz, blues and folk musicians he often performed on stage with his parents and crawled into a sleeping bag by the stage when he got tired. Will’s father taught him baroque guitar technique as they poured through manuscript of Handel, Bach, SL Weiss and many more.
At the age of 9, Will began his formal cello studies with Professor and Music Director, Michael Gelfand. He was accepted into Youth Symphony at the age of 10.
Will holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Cello Performance with a minor in Ethnomusicology from The Ohio State University, where he studied with Professor Margarita Mazo, Chairwoman of the Department of Historical Musicology and Ethnomusicology. Dr. Mazo is a renowned Shostakovich scholar and Expert of Russian Peasant Lament in rural Russia. She and the Music History department granted Will the “Outstanding Undergraduate Achievement Award in Ethnomusicology”.
Will studied Sitar and Ethnomusicology in India and Nepal, where he made field recordings in his research. Also in India he studied Mantra/Vibration in Yogic and Buddhist traditions.
Will holds a Master’s Degree in Cello Performance from Brooklyn College where he studied cello with Professor Marion Feldman, took String Masterclasses with Professor Itzakh Perlman, and studied Conducting and Contemporary Music Ensemble with Professor Tania Leon who conducted him in the New Music Ensemble CONTEMPO, He studied Baroque Performance Practice with Professor Harry Salzman, specializing in Continuo Playing with Singers.
Will spent a semester attending graduates classes at Humboldt Universität zu Berlin in Germany , where he studied Music and Painting of 20th Century Europe, German Lieder from Schubert to Brahms, and German Language. While living in Berlin Will prepared his Master’s Recital program of Bach, Beethoven and Shostakovich.
Will was assistant and associate manager of international music performers at ICMArtists under the tutelages of his bosses, Manager and Senior Booking Director Pat Winter, and Manager Earl Blackburn. In that capacity Will worked on management and booking for an esteemed roster of young soloists, string quartets, solo performers, conductors, orators and attractions, including the Boromir Quartet, The New England String Quartet, The Tel Aviv Quartet, Jonathan Biss, Alicia Weilerstein, Claire Bloom, Julian Fleischer, Jamie Bernstein, Navah Perlman, The Tokyo String Quartet, Christopher Plumber, Ravi and Anoushka Shankar, Martha Argerich, Truls Mørk, Les Arts Florissants, and many others.
In his roll in the booking department of ICM Artists, Will was in charge of executing contacts for such artists as Yo-Yo Ma, The New York Philharmonic on tour, Leon Fleischer, Midori, Sarah Chang, and the whole roster of artists at ICM Artists. As associate manager Will frequently attended concerts at Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall and many other venues to support artists on the roster and represent the company. Working as support to the Assistant of the President, and with fluent German, Will translated publicity materials for such artists as The Vienna Choir Boys, and interfaced with ICM Artists’s Berlin Management-whenever translation was needed-for Conductor Daniel Barenboim.
After ICM Artists Will worked as Associate Manager of Touring under Andrew Grossman at Colombia Artists Management working on touring strategy for Russian orchestras and Ballet companies.
After his tenure at Colombia Artists Management, Will went on to work as an associate publicist at Kathryn King Media, promoting the career trajectories of artists such as Midori, Zuill Bailey,Paul Moravec, Kyung Wha Chung, and other international performing artists on Kathryn King Media’s roster.
Will was Adjunct Professor at The New School University and Parsons College of Art and Design, teaching ESL and American Cultural Language classes for students of Fashion, Design and Fine Art students from Parsons, as well as Music students from Mannes.
Will also worked in the Admissions department at The New School University to evaluate and place incoming international students into ESL classes to support their careers as artists.
In his very popular American Cultural Language classes at Parsons, Will designed curricula and toured students in New York City’s cultural hotspots, galleries and landmark institutions how to engaged with cultural life in NYC, with a focus on Punk, Fashion and Design. This led to projects in which students learned how to connect themselves with others in the New York City Art and Design scenes, how to write about their experiences and how to advocate for themselves as emerging artists within the greater community.
Started playing trumpet at 5; guitar since he can’t remember. Playing blues jazz standards, and rock&roll a la jimmy page, Jimi Hendrix, etc. While playing Bach and Handel that his father taught him.
As a performer Will played cello and guitar regularly since the age of 16 at Community festivals; he played Oboe, Flute and Baritone in middle school band.
His first professional gigs were as a cellist in string quartets at weddings when he 14.
Will was a ‘Tenor 2’ singer in The Columbus Gay Men’s Choir with whom he performed frequently and recorded a holiday album.
Will has work on collaborations and Performance pieces with Colin Self and Raul de Nieves at the Issue Project Room in Brooklyn, and loves to collaborate with multi-media performing artists.
He teaches, coaches and appears regularly in television and film productions in and around NYC.
Will is a Voiceover Actor in English and Spanish. And a devoted student of his Teacher: Professor of Elocution and Voiceover Acting-as well as sought after VO Talent, Professor Alexander Camarillo.
He lives on the Upper West Side of Manhattan with his husband Angel who is an actor in television, film, stage, commercial, and print, along with their dogs Rambo and Athena. When they are not in NYC, they reside live in Mexico City.
